Whitefish Point Lighthouse in Michigan

Those who know the history of Whitefish Bay walk around the Whitefish Pt. Lighthouse with somber thoughts of the many shipwrecks in Lake Superior's history. It's estimated Lake Superior has 550 shipwrecks with most of them happening in the Whitefish Bay area.

The day was overcast a few days ago when we visited the lighthouse in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It's a beautiful structure with bright white siding and a picturesque red roof and a beautiful tower jutting up to the sky. The parking lot was full, even though this is the end of the tourist season.
A salty ship was visible on the horizon of a calm Lake Superior, and people were strolling the sandy beaches and milling about the plaques that told of the Lake Superior's shipwrecks. I've included a plaque that you can read if you click on the photo to enlarge it entitled "Graveyard of the Great Lakes."

The SS Edmund Fitzgerald is one of the shipwrecks from the Whitefish Bay area and its sinking - legendary. My hometown is one of the many communities who suffered from its loss of sailors. Gordon Lightfoot's ballad "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" may be a familiar haunting tune to you.

We pray every new shipping season brings favorable conditions so history isn't repeated.

jj thanks for sharing this post with us. And yes hope the history does not repeats itself with all the shipwrecks, I think today's technology will not allow. Anna :)

JJ, Your post really struck a chord with me as Lumpy (Lumpys Ocean Life) is out on the Grouper boat now, for 10 days. As Long as Men have gone to sea, there's been loved ones waiting at home praying that history does not repeat itself. Thanks for the Great Post! Floyd

Anna, I wish technology wouldn't allow another shipwreck. That would be totally awesome. :D
