Wild Wind Storm along Lake Huron

This brooding photo was taken last night before the ice pelted the house and we took shelter inside. The storm brought high winds with it that still rage outside. Our power was off all day. The waves on Lake Huron are predicted to reach eighteen feet tonight.

When Jeff came home from work we drove to the beach because pounding waves are mesmerizing to watch. We left the car and walked to the shoreline, the wind piercing through our clothes and my ears growing numb. Jeff was smart and wore earmuffs. The sand pelted our faces but I wanted to take some shots. I lined up the boulder on the left hand side for the shot below. Lake Huron is so shallow that the huge waves broke off shore in roiled waters. While standing on the beach I thought the wind would blow me away. LOL It reminded me of a teacher who used to tell me to eat my Wheaties when I was in grade school.

Have a super evening!!! We're hunkered down and I have a tremendous urge to munch.

Just awesome clouds JJ! powerful shot. Hope you made it to shelter and munchies, there so much more fun to eat when it's miserable outside.

I know you are religious, jj, and although I am not, I notice your photos seem to have a spiritual aura to them. You have an eye (talent) for composing professional quality images.

You remember me don't you -- your Florida friend?

Bob, thanks for the compliment. :D

I had to bring myself in tow and eat jello...it's too close to Thanksgiving to gain weight now. :D But I was thinking bridge mix all day. LOL

The wind still is howling.

Thank you, Richard! I've been through some medical problems and that has brought me closer to God. I see Him in Nature loud and strong and would like to think of the sunshine as His smiling down on us.

I do remember you and was hoping you could tell me where the bell is from in the Bell Tower photo below that was snapped in Mackinaw City.

You, dear friend, have a beautiful soul!!!

Thanks, Oswegan!!! I'll have to drop by your blog for a visit.

Hi Fruity! The wind has died down and all is well again. :D That wind actually pushed me up a hill. :D An easy way to go.

Thanks!!!

I have never seen the Great Lakes but they have always intrigued me. I have spent a lot of time at sea and I have been told the the lakes are so large, and at times so rough, that they are more like the ocean than a lake.

When you say the "ice" pelted the house, what was that exactly? Hail like we get here in Oregon, or freezing rain pellets like we sometimes got in New Hampshire? Or something else unique to your geography?

Will, it was more like freezing rain pellets tapping at the house, but we also get hail too. In the past we've had freezing rain that broke the tops of the birch trees off and they looked hideous until they branched out again.

The Great Lakes' views go on forever and it feels like oceans of water. The waves grow enormous sometimes and there have been many shipwrecks in the Great Lakes history. I'm sure you could find some books on them. There's a lot of freighter traffic.

Hugs, :D

Ominous photos jj! They capture so well the mood of the post. I can’t believe you’ve had ice already (*shivers in reluctant anticipation*). The power outages are one reason I am so glad I moved out of the hills I lived in for about 15 years. Everything knocked our power out. We were on top of a hill and when that wind howls, man, I couldn’t sleep. Always I was sure the ancient trees surrounding our modest abode would crash down and punish us for all our misdeeds. (Yes, I was raised Catholic.)

But the waves must be tremendous. I have never lived near so large a body of water. About all I’ve known is a little pond we liked to call a lake but it was not. On the other hand we had rushing rivers and in the spring when all the snow was melting and sliding down the hills, those rapids were threatening.

The memories your photos and commentary bring to me are both lovely and make me somewhat happy not to be in the hills anymore. I do so love so much of the power of nature but maybe as I get older I fear more; I don’t know. But maybe I should have been eating more Wheaties.

Anyway, and as usual, your post returned me to a type of experience I’ve known in the past. I find it compelling that you’ve remained in this place, an at-one-with-nature place. I sometimes miss it and it’s not as though I don’t have a nature reserve now in my back yard, because I do, but it’s nothing like the wild unsupervised big stuff, the effects your pictures and posts consistently remind me.

*adds Wheaties to grocery list*

awomansblog, we're on top of a hill too. At least we don't have to worry about flooding.

I love it when you visit. We're kindred spirits. :D

Wow, JJ did you send these clouds to us, we got some crazy clouds here and wind, and as I told you the wet and then snow finally fell, and the trees still have the leafs. Hopefully will get better because I still have to do some winter prep. BTW you know what they say, that when you walk in the cold you actually burn more calories, because body tries to stay warm, may be that is why you were ready for munching...I love the pictures as always, and I am scared of big waves, lol. Anna :)

Anna, I've been trying to write my name on the clouds so you'd know if they were the same ones when they scooted your way. :D I do think you are getting our weather systems. We also have snow on the ground now.

I looove the big waves because they're adventuresome. :D

Hope you get your winter prep work done soon. Jeff has to hang the bird feeder. Maybe today.

Lol, jj, regarding no need for flood insurance. You're so right about that. There's a geico commercial though that makes me laugh about how only ficus trees are covered when they fall on your property.

anna: It's good to know about the cold-weather walks because the older I get, the more difficult it is to burn calories, so thanks for the tip. (I'll stop by your blog soon too.)

*shivers thinking about cold weather and preparations*

Anyway, good to chat with you all as always. I'll have to start checking out other people's blogs here too. Till then, be well all♥

Great commercial, awomansblog. :D How did you get the heart icon to work? I love it.

Hugs, JJ

awomansblog said...

Here is how to do the ♥s, jj:

do not put spaces between the following sets of numbers on the list and do not use the numbers; type is out straight in a single line (but if I type it out here without the numbered list, it will turn into a ♥):

1) &
2) hearts
3) ;

awomansblog said...

ps: don't use the ) either.

just type those three things out with no spaces in between

Thanks JJ, I will be watching out for the name then, lol. Anna :)

Awomansblog, no problem, whenever I have big dinner I try to walk so I know with cold I only will get short walk, but still burn the same amount of calories, lol. But not today, even I felt like eating a lot, lol. Anna :)
