The fire licks flames in the wood stove on this chilly September morning. Autumn has arrived early and I greeted her today by walking in her soggy grass, noticing the heavy due drooping the pansies and discoloring the morning glories to a light purple, by saying goodbye to the flowers that delighted me for weeks and weeks.
Around me the leaves were quiet, as if the trees were holding their breath, not wanting to experience the frostier air, hoping for a few more minutes of chlorophyll gathering. A lazy sun's weak beams poked through the poplars, in no hurry to reach the zenith in the sky, thinking perhaps she didn't have to rise so high today.
My skin was cold as I observed the dark orange winter squash ripening in the garden, and I decided the tomatoes and peaches and plums that haven't ripened should finish their job inside. I better check the weather for the first frost.
The yellow ragweed smiled under a faded blue sky and I wished she wasn't so happy because I am allergic to the yellow tufts of flowers. ACHOO!
In the distance I heard the chickadees and I in turn smiled, because I know their antics would delight me in the coming cold months. Soon it's time for the feeder.
The photo was taken in the Three Lakes area a month ago. Jeff and I loved that roaming around that area because of its beauty and quietude. A perfect place for an autumn picnic and kayaking.
Hugs, JJ

Beautiful pic dear,as usual :)
Hmmm I love autumn, maybe it's the hues it generates.
Happy Autumn!
Thank you, Sameera. :D
Autumn does have charm in a crisp and colorful way.
Hugs, JJ
"Autumn" here in the deep south is like "Summer" in the rest of the US, so I'm looking forward to it. Temps in the hundreds w/high humidity + hurricane season isn't so much fun.
"peaches and plums that haven't ripened should finish their job inside." -- beauty JJ!
It is just flowing...
Your photo and description makes me anticipate autumn even more!
Lovely description, Nancy. I can't wait for those autumn photos that I know are coming.
Lana, I pray your hurricane season settles down. What a hard time to endure.
I'm glad you are looking forward to autumn. :D
Merging Point, my counter is full of peaches. :D I looove this time of year. Some of the tomatoes are drying, and I am thinking also of fried green tomatoes. Thank you, dear.
Shellmo, we are lucky people, aren't we!!!
Suzanne, thank you. :D I was out in the dark with Jeff just now shooting a photo. Will show the pic on my blog. :D And to think autumn is just BEGINNING!!! Jeff and I are in for some great times.
Hugs, JJ
I think Autumn is my favorite season emotionally. Summer is my favorite physically because I can do so much more hiking, camping, and on the water stuff. :) But there is something so poignant about fall. Growing up in Maine it was BRILLIANT beyond belief. I miss that much color her in the southwest. Although there is a passionate beauty here that is mystical and golden...like nowhere I've ever been.
Beautiful pictures. More than the pictures the passion with which you click these is so evident, be it a rock or a bird.
Some of these pictures are the best I have seen. Its a great way to blog. Your pictures and posts make a great read anyday. Its seeing this land through your eyes, and for someone like me in the Tropics its like seeing a fairyland come alive.
We been having very heavy rains out here so the internet connection is intermittent. So I get to see the blog only once in a while till the rainy spell is through.
autumn is amazing time, so beautiful always and so different :)
Great pic :)
I'm usually melancholic in autumn and generally am not happy about the fact that it's coming, but you actually make it sound beautiful :)
JJ, beautiful image, I love the fall as well, doesn't last too long here, usually have snow before the leaves turn, too bad.
Robin, that's great you found "home". :D Maine would have awesome color during the autumn season. You have been fortunate to live in two beautiful states. :D
Kitchenette Soul, thanks, dear. :D I'm glad you can live through the four seasons with reading blogs. Am honored you have found mine interesting. :D
I hope your rains stop soon. Haven't the weather been something lately!!! We've had very wet summer. Our house was hit by lightning and I lost my computer through a power surge. The hot water heater element fried too.
Lena, thank you, hon. :D I hope our autumns are gorgeous this year. With the chilly nights we are having, it's winding up to be a beautiful season.
Bitter Chocolate, when I was a kid I used to roast apples and potatoes in the burning leaf pile and remember that sooooo vividly. Autumn is a great season. :D November is the hard month for me.
Bob, oh no. You have snow before the leaves fall!!! I'll keep my fingers crossed that you have more of one this year. This year has been unpredictable.
Thank you!
Hugs, JJ
JJ:
Really a wonderful post. It is you who should be writing a book.
