This female downy woodpecker landed on my feeder yesterday. She had her black and white feathers puffed against the cold and was eyeing up the sunflower seed while she pecked on the suet block that had broken in half. We have to remember to buy a suet feeder.Every morning the trees are full of chickadees, gold finches and red polls waiting for us to bring out more seed. Something gobbles it all down during the night.
The winter continues to howl around us. More snow today. But the temps are heading into the teens, so there is hope we can enjoy the sunshine again. Yesterday was frigid downtown. I walked like a broomstick in and out of the stores, bracing against the cold. LOL
Have a super weekend, dear readers. :D The birds are a blessing right now, because nature has frozen breath.

Jinhui has given me the Butterfly Award. :D Thank you. I love how different cultures come together through blogging.

She's beautiful! I hope the birds will bring us spring soon, not a huge fan of frozen nature, or frozen me :D
Bitter Chocolate, I'm with you. :D Thank you, dear. :D We will have to celebrate when we can store the heavy winter clothing away.
Hugs, JJ
She is so pretty w/ her puffed up chest! The birds have been going crazy at my feeders - I refilled them yesterday 4 times! And the chickadee were lined up in the branches yelling out me to hurry up (well I think that's what they were saying) as I was trying to refill it as fast as I could.
Shellmo, the birds are insisting on us waking up early, aren't they!
Good morning, dear friend.
Hugs, JJ
Nice photo JJ!
I haven't fed birds since I realized that a hawk was using my feeders as his private buffet. -Part of the cycle of nature, I know, but I felt so bad for the occasional victims! It's so cold here now, I probably need to reconsider...
I love the woodpecker! She sure deserves her pride of place on the header :)
Have a great weekend dearie!
*Hugs*
Heather, I have had that happen a couple of times but I believe the birds do benefit from having birdseed available.
Thank you, Sameera. :D Have an awesome weekend too!!!

JJ:
Brrr. Does it ever sound cold in y ur neck of the woods.
That's a great shot of the woodpecker. I'm amazed that their feathers keep them warm enough to be out in the cold. Maybe we humans should make our winter coats out of feathers.
Love the image.
happy trails.
What a great pic, and she is beautiful. I have seen my chickadee aroung latly too...I hope this is a sign we will have an early spring :) Stay warm...I like the sound of chocolate...mmmmm
Kia ora JJ,
She, He, looks defiant of the cold, much more and better prepared for battle than we mere humans. I love this photo!
Aroha to you my amazing friend,
Robb
Swubird, you may be on to something with the feather coat idea. :D The ducks and swans are having a great time swimming inside the frozen boundaries of the lakes and rivers here.
Thanks. :D
Nature Lovin', Jeff and I are hoping the same thing as we listen to the howling wind. Spring, come soon!!!
I just finished a cup of hot chocolate. :D
Thank you. :D
Robb, birds can sing in the harshest weather conditions. I take great inspiration from them. :D The tiny creatures have the stamina of an ox.
Aw, thank you. :D I'm happy you are enjoying this blog.
Have a super start to the week!!!

JJ, isn't she sexy, lol. What a nice photo of the bird. Oh miss those days where I used to chase birds in the forest, lol, just last year, but I am looking forward to do this with Matthew. Anna :) PS and ofcource my husband, lol
Anna, next Matthew will be wanting a digital camera. :D I bet you'll have him snapping digital photos early. :D
Thanks, dear. I'm glad you enjoyed the female downy woodpecker. Nature rocks!!!

Hi JJ
Well, alas sadly I have to report that due to neglect (not filling the bird feeder) my little creatures have decided to go on to another restaurant somewhere.
As for the cold...I love it. I'll take the dog out for half an hour in the woods and come out mustache and beard caked in ice and feeling refreshed.
A quick note...by adjusting the white balance point in your camera you can get rid of the bluish caste...unless of course you want it that way. She certainly is beautiful. We don't see too may of her kind in this neck of the woods. I did however run into a young black bear the other day while out strolling (why it was out in the middle of winter is beyond me)but it was too groggy or just didn't care I was around.
Anyways take of yourself and have a great week.
~JD
btw...the mustache and beard are not feeling refreshed...I am, after walking around in the frigid cold LOL
Sorry...I reread my comment.
~JD
so beautifully aligned, here she is unknowingly befitting the picture so well...
JD, thanks for the white balance tip. I do encourage it in some photos, especially if I shoot in RAW. But I'll experiment with your advice. I appreciate all photography tips!!! And am delighted you visit my blog.
LOL on the icy mustache and beard. I hope we can see a photo on your blog!!! How great that you embrace the cold.:D Jeff works in it and is acclimated also.
Have a super week too, dear friend. :D
Merging, you have such a beautiful spirit. Sigh. Thank you, sweetie. :D
