Snowy Tahquamenon Falls!

Jeff and I had a romantic, enchanting snowy day at Tahquamenon Falls yesterday. When we left town, it was 12 degrees Fahrenheit, a little cold, but the snow squalls were intermittent and we knew the sun would help us out with some warming rays. Just in case, I slipped heat warmers around my ankles and the cameras had their little heating pads too. My toes stayed toasty warm for the adventure. And I wore a huge faux fur scarf that kept my face warmer. Last year I thought my chin would fall off from the numbness. LOL

As we walked the path to the falls, the snow was packed and slippery so we used caution, but the delights that met our eye - the snow covered railing and snow blanketed pines - were worth the slower steps. I snapped pathway shots with my Kodak Easy Share camera, saving my Canon Rebel XTi battery for the falls. I'll show more pics soon.

After the winter brought temps below freezing and snow to Upper Michigan, the falls began to take a surreal, breathtaking look and we're happy we didn't miss this awesome view! As you can see in the Tahquamenon Falls winter photo, we were greeted with the amazing sight of the tannin streaming waters cascading over the steep ledges and the "Victorian" look of the ice in the middle of the falls caught my eye right away. Ice sculptures at Tahquamenon are always amazing and give the scene a surreal setting.

After I tired of snapping photos - the crazy carpal tunnel, we headed to the Lower Tahquamenon Falls where a snow piled campground is kept open all year. However, the trail to the falls wasn't cleared and we would have had to snowshoe for two miles. So we are saving that adventure for the next trip. :D

I know I have some blog visiting to do and promise to catch up in the next couple of days. :D

Hugs, JJ

I loved this snowy capture of the falls! What a brave soul you are! (And great idea for warmers for the camera!) The hubby and I are looking forward to visiting the falls again this summer. It's such a beautiful place and you capture it very well!

Thank you, Shellmo. We loved the UP trip, even though Jeff drove me on icy highways to arrive there.

I loooove the summer falls too. :D

Sounds like you had a nice day, JJ, and it's good that you made a point to dress warmly. No one wants a frozen chin...or nose...or fingers....

It looks like a great place to visit and photograph. I was wondering if that was tannin from decaying leaves in the water, but you've answered that for me!

Lynda, yup, it's from the vegetation. I love watching the tannin waters as they flow into Lake Superior. It's quite the contrast of water color.

I hope you can visit Tahquamenon Falls one day. :D

I have to admit, this made me remember Niagara Falls in Winter, a sight seen by virtually no one. They're missing a wonderful treat, but personally I prefer the solitude of the Falls in Winter to the absolute insanity of the Falls in Summer.
Gads...I must plan another trip back...

What a great adventure and great photos to show for it. I never knew about the tannin but it definitely makes sense. The snow looks cold.

Happy trails.

Zain, Thank you. Tahquamenon Falls, Michigan, are definitely worth the visit during the winter. :D The surroundings are quiet, except for the roar of the falls. The surreal riverbank icicles look like stalactites in a cave. AWESOME!!!

Thank you for visiting. :D

Bob, I bought regular, inexpensive handwarmers. :D I'm glad you enjoyed the pic. I was toasty warm outside with warmers keeping me cozy. I know you spend lots of time outside in inclement weather. You are a special spirit. :D

Swubird, this has been a harsh winter and the temps are dippin to zero again this weekend. But we took advantage of the weather in teens and made a grand adventure out of it. :D I'm glad you enjoyed the Tahquamenon Falls winter pic. :D

JD, thank you and no kidding. Snow needs a contrasting color to give it some zip. I know you would have loooved Tahquamenon Falls during the winter and the photo opportunities. :D

Thank you, dear friends!!!

~Thought I'd already commented on this (that's the kind of week it's been!)...
I REALLY enjoyed seeing/hearing about Tahquamenon Falls. -Remembered it vividly from a childhood visit but couldn't remember the name or location. I always enjoy your commentary and photos.
Thanks JJ!
