Mackinaw Bridge, Straits Area, Michigan

As the spring weather melts the last of the ice and snow, Jeff and I are beginning to dream of taking another trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The last time we traveled over the Mackinaw Bridge, I snapped this shot and am happy with the depth of field I was able to give the photo. The bridge spans five miles long and has a great view of Lake Huron on the right and Lake Michigan on the left hand side of the photo. On the right, you can see the pathway through the ice that the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw carved to keep the shipping lanes open for longer during the winter season.

I was delighted to see a blue sky that day with tiny tufts of windblown clouds that gave the photo more interest. Sometimes the days are steel gray in the winter and I avoid washed out sky photos then.

The beautiful Mackinaw Bridge has a web cam where you can enjoy Internet views of the bridge morning, noon and night. The bridge symbolizes freedom to me. How lucky we are to have the opportunities to travel over it to sight see.

On another note, we have our first purple crocus in bloom! I had a photo shoot this afternoon with the blossom and was thrilled to start snapping spring shots. :D Life begins again after a six month winter's rest.

Have a super day!

Hugs, JJ

Congrats on the crocuses! The photo reminds me of my last Winter in Canada, the coldest on record in 100 years, when 3 of the Great Lakes froze. Ick!

That IS a very nice shot, JJ. My youngest and I watched a "Dirty Jobs" program about the guys who work on the bridge; quite interesting!!
~Have thought about taking him up that way for a weekend this summer...

That's one long bridge. I'd hate to have my car brake down out there. Brrr.

Reading all of your posts and seeing your great pictures over the last several months has definitely given me the feeling that I've spent the cold winter right along with you guys. I've ridden along on all of your wilderness trips; I've peered out of your window at the birds and the new fallen snow; I've listened in as you've planned your springtime adventures; and I've seen the first flowers bloom as the earth moved immutably passed the Vernal Equinox through the adventurous Aries towards the more patient and loving Taurus. And I've done it all from the warmth and comfort of my home. Isn't the Internet wonderful?

Happy trails.

Lana, the crocus blooms look lovely. :D

We had a bad winter this year. I'm happy it's over.

Heather, thank you. I bet your son would love a trip to the Upper Peninsula. Canyon Falls would intrigue him. You can hike along the trails and the slate rock river gorge looks amazing. Canyon Falls are located on the winding Sturgeon River. I love that place!!!

Swu, aw, thank you. That was beautiful!!! I have all my readers in my heart. And am glad you could experience the last Northern Michigan winter from the warmth of your home. :D

Everyone travel safely this Easter weekend.

I love how so many lines in this photo lead together to the one point, which is your ultimate destination. You have a natural eye for composition.

Robb, Happy Easter!!! I must visit your blog to catch up since you are back from the mountains. :D I'm glad I took you down memory lane with the Mackinaw Bridge photo.

Merging Point, thank you. I was lucky that day and the sky wasn't gray. I look forward to your posts too. :D

This is a gorgeous shot of the bridge! It's so beautiful! (And this bridge makes me so nervous when I cross it! LOL!) Oh - and I thought you lived in the U.P. - lol! But you live in northern Mich right? HOpe you had a nice Easter!!

Bunka, I share your joy for spring!!! Am waiting for my crocus blooms to open in the sun so I can snap more photos. :D

Thank you for greeting me in your language. :D

We had a beautiful Easter. A lovely church service and quality time with family. Enjoy your festivity next week!

Shellmo, I am a little nervous on the bridge too. Am afraid of heights. I'm glad you enjoyed the Mackinaw Bridge photo! Thank you.

I live in Northern Michigan but Jeff and I love traveling in the UP. We both used to live there. :D

The UP has too much winter for us to wait that season out. Northern Michigan is more bearable during the cold season.

Boy, the cold winds sure don't want to quit blowing this spring. I hear them again!

Have a super day, dear friends!!!

Nice photo my friend, I like the composition of it very much as well as the contrast of the colors and the play of the lines from the bridge.
Great! Have a good weekend!
